Replace the M.2 2280 NVMe SSD in a Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 1
Upgrading your laptop's SSD is an effective way to boost performance and storage capacity. In this quick guide, I will show you how to safely disassemble the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 1 and replace its M.2 2280 NVMe SSD. Whether you are extending your storage or replacing a faulty drive, these steps will help you accomplish the task with ease.
For this guide, I bought a SAMSUNG PM9B1 512GB M.2 PCIe Gen 4x4 NVMe SSD. However, you can follow these instructions with any compatible M.2 2280 NVMe SSD.
Tools and Preparation
Required tools: A small Phillips screwdriver and a plastic opening tool.
Safety: Backup your data, power off the laptop, and follow all instructions carefully to avoid damaging your laptop or its components.
Step 1: Disable the Built-in Battery
1. Power off the laptop and restart it to enter the BIOS.
2. Access the BIOS, navigate to Config, after that go to Power and choose Disable Built-in Battery.
3. Select this option to disable the built-in battery. This step ensures safety by preventing electrical damage during disassembly.
Step 2: Remove the Base Cover
1. Place the laptop on a flat surface, bottom side up.
2. Use a Phillips screwdriver to loosen the six captive screws securing the base cover. These screws are designed to stay attached to the cover, so you won?t lose them.
3. Gently pry the edges of the base cover using a plastic opening tool. Once loosened, lift it off and set it aside.
Step 3: Remove the Old SSD
1. Locate the M.2 2280 NVMe SSD slot above the battery, on the right-hand side.
2. Unscrew the small retaining screw that holds the SSD in place.
3. Carefully slide the SSD out of its slot and set it aside.
Step 4: Install the New SSD
1. Insert the new M.2 2280 NVMe SSD into the slot at a slight angle. Ensure it is properly aligned.
2. Push it down gently until it lies flat and secure it with the retaining screw.
Step 5: Reassemble the Laptop
1. Align the base cover with the laptop and press it gently into place.
2. Tighten the six captive screws to secure the cover.
Step 6: Test the Installation
1. Reconnect the USB-C charger to re-enable the built-in battery.
2. Power on the laptop and boot into the BIOS or operating system.
3. Confirm that the new SSD is recognized by the system.
